Building Inspector – Community Development

 

The City of Crest Hill (population 20,837), a progressive, growing community in the north central region of Will County, seeks an individual to work in the Community Development Department.

The Building Inspector performs skilled administrative and investigative work in the inspection of all City commercial, industrial, and residential properties to secure and maintain compliance with the City Code of Ordinances and codes governing building trades.

Providing excellent customer service when interacting with residents is required.

Normal work hours are 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday, limited overtime work.

 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Inspects buildings in the course of construction, alteration, and repair for compliance with building code regulations and requirements.
  • Inspects buildings for compliance with City Housing Code requirements.
  • May review building plans, calculations, and specifications for proposed structures and validate estimates for proposed construction.
  • May review development permits, architectural, and engineering plans to ensure compliance with building and zoning codes.
  • Investigates complaints of City code violations including property maintenance, building, zoning and related laws and ordinances; Issues warning notices, notices of violation, citations, correction notices and stop work orders to ensure compliance.
  • Identifies unsafe structures and prepares notices for the abatement of unsafe buildings.
  • Prepares written reports, memoranda, documentation, and correspondence related to citations and violations.
  • May oversee final inspection and approve certificate of occupancy permits as appropriate.
  • Interprets and provides information regarding building regulations, codes, and permits to residents and developers.
  • Attends administrative hearings, Plan Commission and City Council meetings, as necessary.
  • Assists Building Commissioner and Community Development Director & Zoning Manager, as necessary.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Education & Experience:

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Five years building construction, trade or inspection experience preferred.
  • Associate degree with coursework in building and property maintenance codes or building construction or related field preferred.
  • International Code Council (ICC) certifications and designation as Certified Building Official (CBO) strongly preferred.
  • Valid Driver’s license.
  • Ability to pass a drug/alcohol screen and background check.
  • Ability to read, clearly speak, and legibly write the English language.

 

Salary and Benefits

  • The compensation range for this position is $60,000 to $70,000 per year depending on experience. The actual salary will be dependent on qualifications and experience. 
  • The City offers a comprehensive benefits package including participation in the Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund, medical, dental, vision, and life insurance coverage, paid vacation, personal/sick leave and holidays. The City does not have a residency requirement.
