Colby's campus comprises 714 acres including a 70-acre-plus outdoor competition center that consists of three gleaming new competition and recreational fields. Most of Mayflower Hill, including all of the 128-acre Perkins Arboretum and Bird Sanctuary, is a State Wildlife Management Area. Johnson Pond, the Campbell Trails for running and cross-country skiing, a student run organic garden, and vast areas of wide-open space provide reasons to enjoy Colby's campus year-round.
The mechanic will perform quality skilled work in the care, maintenance, service, and repair of grounds-related equipment and machinery, including service work on vehicles and buses maintaining them in a road-worthy and safe condition. In addition, they keep all vehicles and equipment in a high state of readiness and compliant with regulatory requirements, including keeping state inspections current. The mechanic will maintain accurate equipment and vehicle service records, oversee daily cleaning and preparation of equipment, track and address equipment deficiencies noted on work orders, and inspection reports.
The mechanic also cares for shop equipment and the tools and machinery used in the performance of their duties. The successful candidate will periodically operate electrically-powered, gasoline-powered, and diesel powered equipment and other machinery. They use hand tools and power tools to service and repair equipment and machinery, perform other work including but not limited to, snow removal, traffic control, and additional miscellaneous support duties as needed. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The position reports to the grounds supervisor and landscape manager and has significant interaction with faculty, staff, students, peers, and the Colby community.

Position is 40 hours per week working in all weather conditions. Overtime required as needed by College schedule and weather conditions. Must be available for planned and unplanned night and weekend work for College events, snow removal, and other needs as required. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. frequently and 75 pounds or more on an occasional basis, with prolonged walking or standing, frequent bending, twisting, crawling, stooping, squatting, kneeling, and reaching on varied terrain and irregular surfaces on a daily basis.
Requires visual and auditory acuity, manual dexterity and a full range of physical motion with the ability to work in tight spaces and/or with your hands and arms above your head. Requires the ability to access areas which may only be reachable by climbing stairs or ladders to a height of 40 feet as required to ensure completion of the work.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Perform a wide variety of equipment maintenance and repair tasks including: equipment assembly and disassembly, fitting, threading, cutting, drilling, sawing, grinding, soldering, brazing, welding, metal fabrication, and painting work involved in the preparation, patching, finishing, maintaining, and repair of equipment and machinery
- Properly and safely operate and repair grounds department equipment, as assigned by the supervisor, including cars, trucks, tractors, riding mowers, forklift, Zamboni, and bobcat
- Demonstrate basic mechanical understanding of all ground's equipment
- Maintain records of conditions observed and work performed, process and submit documentation in a neat and legible manner as required
- Available for planned and unplanned night and weekend work for College events, snow removal, and other needs as required
- Oversee periodic assignments of students and/or summer employees to ensure that work is performed to College standards
- Follow operator instructions, properly and safely operate and repair all hand held equipment including lawn mowers, chain saws, trimmers, brooms, snow blowers, etc.
- Work in a neat, careful manner to prevent injury to self and others to prevent damage to any material, equipment, or property, and to follow all prescribed safety rules and procedures
- As authorized, purchase and take delivery of parts, materials, supplies, and equipment from vendors and suppliers; promptly turn in shipping and delivery receipts and other associated paperwork; safely unload, transport store supplies and materials
- Safely operate tools and equipment necessary to perform job duties
- Work in a positive, cooperative manner with other departmental personnel
- Exhibit a willingness to participate in training and educational opportunities in order to enhance skills and abilities
- Communicate effectively and personably with a diverse community of people
- Follow all OSHA rules and procedures including use of PPE as needed
- Respond to emergency calls as necessary

- High school diploma or equivalent required; professional coursework or post-secondary education are a plus
- Minimum 5 years experience in maintenance and repair of grounds-related equipment and machinery, vehicle maintenance and repair required
- Need to have or be able to obtain a state and inspection license within 6 months of hire.
- Working knowledge of diagnosis, methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the care, maintenance, and repair of electric, 2-cycle and 4-cycle gasoline, and diesel powered equipment and machinery; ability to diagnose and repair heavy construction equipment including pay-loaders and tri-axle trucks
- Ability to read, write, and speak English sufficiently to understand written work orders, instructions, and directions for proper mixture, use, and disposal/storage of cleaners, solvents, chemicals, fuels, and similar products used in equipment maintenance and repair and shop operations
- Highly skilled in proper operation, maintenance, and care of tools, equipment, and machinery involved in the performance of these duties is required
- Experience to accurately diagnose and identify equipment and machinery problems and promptly make necessary adjustments or repairs to maintain the equipment resources at a high state of readiness and availability for regular daily use and in accordance with industry standards
- Knowledge of vehicle computer diagnostics, electronic fuel systems, anti-locking brake systems, vehicle and equipment electrical diagrams, engines, transmissions, fuel systems, hydraulic systems, exhaust and emissions systems; understanding of federal, state and local regulations as related to vehicle inspection and maintenance
- Competent in understanding OSHA General Industry standards. OSHA certification or equivalent preferred
- Basic computer skills including word processing, spreadsheet applications, databases and record-keeping systems is preferred
- Display a courteous customer-friendly attitude at all times
- Ability to be reliable, responsible, and dependable, and fulfill obligations in a timely manner
- Valid driver's license required and must meet the College's Fleet Safety Policy requirements
- Must be able to work independently, or as part of a team, exercise judgment, and manage projects with minimal supervision as well as to adjust as new projects are assigned
- Solid communication skills in order to work collaboratively with members of a diverse community and to provide excellent customer service
