South Carolina Governor's School for Science and Mathematics
This person will serve as a landscaper for the South Carolina Governor's School for Science and Mathematics and will be primarily responsible for the maintenance and enhancement of the institution's landscape and grounds.
LANDSCAPE DESIGN AND MAINTENANCE: Plans, manages, and performs various tasks required to accomplish landscaping goals. Performs groundskeeping requirements of the School in order to maintain a well-kept, attractive, and secure environment to help satisfy the School's recruitment, institutional advancement, and safety/security needs, including planning for seasonal needs. Communicates with the supervisor and Vice President of Finance and Operations, and immediately alerts the School of potential problems regarding landscaping and groundskeeping.
Specific duties and responsibilities include:
a. Landscape design (to include presenting an annual landscape plan to the supervisor and internal Administration);
b. Equipment purchase, maintenance, and security;
c. Loading, unloading, and spreading of mulch and topsoil;
d. Planting or relocating trees, shrubbery, bulbs, perennials, and annuals;
e. Blowing, raking, and bagging of leaves and grass from lawn and flower beds, particularly during the fall season;
f. Routinely monitoring and maintaining plant health for optimal growth;
g. Removing ground debris and pruning/cutting limbs from trees;
h. Mowing flat and incline surfaces;
i. Ensuring the campus is free of weeds and prioritizing beautification projects;
j. Performing flower bed maintenance to include replacing existing flowers and shrubbery as needed and filling beds and planters with pine straw in a neat and precise manner;
k. Ensuring all trash, limbs, and debris are picked up and properly disposed of;
l. Treating the Soccer/Activity field for weeds with liquid fertilizer regularly; and
m. Routinely spraying for disease and insects.
GENERAL FACILITIES SUPPORT: Assists with general facility maintenance, construction projects, housekeeping, and event setup and breakdown as needed for special projects/events (including during peak times for facilities), daily cleaning, and during inclement weather. Performs other duties as required and assigned.
Special job requirements: Maintenance of a valid pesticide license; if the identified job candidate does not already have a valid pesticide license, one must be obtained within three months of employment.
Preferred skills: Knowledge of arboriculture and horticulture. Knowledge of the proper use of fungicides, insecticides, and herbicides.
