General Definition of Work

The Camp Counselor supervises a group of children in the vast array of Blacksburg Parks and Recreation Summer Camp Programs including, but not limited to - outdoor, athletic, arts and sciences, and general summer camp activities. Assists the Program Supervisor with planning and carrying out activities. Works under the direct supervision of the Program Supervisor and the general supervision of the Assistant Parks and Recreation Director and the Parks and Recreation Director.

Age groups range from young children (3-7), to children (8-12), and/or teenagers (13-15).
Shifts may include weekdays, weekends, mornings, afternoons, or evenings depending on specific camp schedules.

Essential Functions

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily.   • Assists with the development and implementation of daily routine, schedule, programming and organization of all summer camp activities
  • Maintains control and discipline of a group of children at all times and in all locations
  • Works closely with the Program Supervisor in implementing scheduled activities
  • Carries out the programs scheduled for summer camp
  • Assists in preparing required reports and forms
  • Prepares areas and locations to in use during summer camp programs
  • Obtains and stores equipment in proper area in an organized manner
  • Enforces all safety rules
  • Upholds and enforces department policies
  • Reports potential physical hazards in the facility and equipment to the Program Coordinator
  • Effectively communicates problems to the Program Supervisor, Department Program Coordinator, and Department staff or others
  • Administers lifesaving and emergency techniques covered by certified training
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED

All types of recreational supplies including but not limited to balls, bats, phone, emergency equipment, two-way radio, etc.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Special Requirements
  • High School Diploma or GED Certification
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Completion of a CPR , Standard First Aid, AED courses, or have the ability to obtain training, and any other training scheduled by the department
  • A valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record

Additional Outdoor Camp physical requirements may include:
  • May require the frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force
  • Work regularly requires standing, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel and repetitive motions, frequently requires walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling and reaching with hands and arms and occasionally requires sitting, climbing or balancing, tasting or smelling, pushing or pulling and lifting
  • Work has standard vision requirements
  • Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word
  • Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound
  • Work requires operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities
