Brief Summary of Work for this Position

Summer Ventures Residential staff are provided housing, most meals, and a Student Rec Center membership while working with the program. Summer Ventures is a 4-week, research immersion program for high-achieving, North Carolina students ages 16 & 17 interested in pursuing STEM (learn more about the program on theSummer Ventures website). The residential staff supervises the SVSM students in the residential setting. They ensure students follow the academic schedule and all policies & procedures. The residential staff will lead recreational activities for individual and group participation.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Qualifications for Summer Ventures Residential Staff include:
  • Must be available Monday, June 17 – 21 for staff training/prep for students Sunday, June 23-July 3, and Sunday, July 7-20, 2024.
  • High school diploma and at least two years of college toward an associate or bachelor's degree
  • At least 21 years old (for driving purposes)
  • Experience as camp counselor or other position involving supervision of youth
  • Possess strong oral communication skills to communicate effectively with students, parents, and staff
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience
  • College major in a STEM area or education-related field
  • Experience as a Residential Assistant
  • Experience as a camp counselor or other position involving supervision of youth (sports coaching, scout leader, tutor)
  • Lifeguard certification would be a plus
Required Certifications or Licensure
  • CPR/First Aid Certification
  • Drivers License

Work Hours

Monday - Friday 6:45am - 8:45am and 3:30pm - 11:00pm, Saturday & Sunday 7:00am - 11:00pm

Hours Per Week

50 hours per week for Monday - Friday (unless some duties had to also be performed while on call); and additional 32 hours of overtime for Saturday & Sunday

Special Instructions to Applicants

Please note: this is a temporary position. “On call” means that you will not earn work hours unless you are called to duty. The length of the assignment will be based on department need with the possibility of continuation. Employees in temporary positions are not considered permanent state employees and do not earn leave. Temporary employees are subject to the Affordable Care Act guidelines. Pay varies by position and is based on qualifications, knowledge, skills, and abilities. Additional compensation includes housing and some meals when working.
