Assistant Technical Director



The Assistant Technical Director is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the scene shop and its accompanying spaces with student and over-hire crews in scenery and props construction. Advise and consult with technical director, designers, and faculty on specific building materials and assist in quoting and purchasing scenic materials, properties, and other necessary equipment for individual productions and shop inventory. This position will collaborate with the technical director, design tech faculty, students, and designers in design implementation for departmental productions and in the execution of projects requiring carpentry, welding, rigging, upholstery, and other production skills. Attending design/tech area, and production meetings. Assist in maintaining theatrical spaces, drafting and inventories, and student safety training documentation.
Assist with training and supervising student workers, over-hire technicians, 0880 lab students, and student volunteers during technical processes. Coordinate with production director and technical director to evaluate and accommodate seasonal internal and external rentals of spaces, soft goods, and equipment. During the summer term, position is primary contact for rental companies and ensures safety check-ins during venue occupation.


Job Summary

Essential Functions

The successful candidate will use a computer extensively. They must be capable of oral, written, and electronic communications.


Physical Effort

Lifting lumber, furniture, and other scenery units weighing approximately 10lbs. to 50 lbs. unassisted is required. Must have good sense of balance and be able to climb ladders. Able to operate in aerial work platforms and on catwalks up to a height of 40 ft.
