Job Summary

The Department of Chemistry at the University of Utah has an immediate opening for a NMR Operation/Maintenance manager. Under minimal supervision, the manager of the nuclear magnetic resonance ( NMR) laboratory will be responsible for planning, organizing, directing and/or controlling all aspects pertaining to (but not limited to) maintenance of NMR facility services including ensuring smooth facility operations and cryogen inventory management. They will also act as a catalyst between the department and its customers to ensure continuity and quality of service and care.

Responsibilities

1. Planning, organizing, and/or controlling all aspects of routine NMR instrument upkeep.

2. Ensuring reliable routine management of cryogen inventories and instrument fills.

3. Managing the helium recovery system logistics, upkeep, and transfers.

4. Support and respond to urgent instrument user needs.

5. Facilitate basic NMR user training and account setup.

Minimum Qualifications

Requires a Bachelor's degree in a related area of assignment or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) and 4 years of progressively more responsible management experience. Background knowledge of assigned department's area of specialization in order to analyze, plan and draw conclusions for recommendations to superiors. Demonstrated leadership skills in planning and directing employees and processes in order to effectively monitor and develop subordinates and to ensure the smooth operation of department. Completion of provided supervisory training within one year of employment may be required.

Master's degree in a related area may be preferred.

Applicants must demonstrate the potential ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined in the position description.

Preferences

Bachelor's degree in a chemistry, physics, electrical engineering, or chemical engineering preferred.

Background knowledge of NMR fundamentals and application preferred.

Knowledge of radio technology and electronics preferred.
