Job Summary

The Student Employee Engagement Specialist provides professional support and development to student employees in student affairs. Student Affairs hosts approximately 760 paid student employees and nearly 100 unpaid interns and fellows. This position will work collaboratively with colleagues in human resources, supervisors in student affairs, directors, and colleagues across campus. The specialist must demonstrate the ability to work independently with minimum supervision. This position is responsible for establishing potential milestones for student employees and creating personalized pathways in Student Affairs for student employees that enhance their learning, engagement, and experiences within the division. This position will contribute to key strategic objectives for improving the division's organizational capacity while also improving student outcomes.

This position will assist departments in creating meaningful employment opportunities for students in student affairs and ensuring that all potential student employees have equal access to opportunities within the division. The specialist will assist in developing and implementing resources, processes, and engagement opportunities for student employees within student affairs. It is essential that the specialist collaborates with HR on procedures and policies in support of both federal work-study and non-federal work-study employment. The specialist will serve as an advocate for improved student employment experiences at the University of Utah.

Responsibilities
  1. The specialist will interpret and apply University and internal policies to issues in a specific Human Resource function. Through consultation with University Human Resources, the specialist will advise and guide student affairs administrators and staff regarding policies and procedures.
  2. Prepare reports and documentation regarding the student employee and supervisor experience in student affairs. Analyzes data to evaluate the effectiveness of procedures and processes.
  3. Develop strategies and tools to monitor, track, and compile forms of quantitative and qualitative data. Deploy creative methods for collecting and representing data, literature reviews, existing research, and other forms of information.
  4. The specialist must establish and maintain effective and influential relationships with Student Affairs and campus stakeholders.
  5. Recommends modifications regarding existing practices to supervision and develops, coordinates, and implements changes as needed.
  6. Create and maintain resources for potential and current student employees and supervisors.
  7. Assists in attaining divisional objectives by performing special projects and studies at the request of the associate vice president for student development and Student Affairs leadership.
  8. Function as a resource for university staff and administration to address Human Resource questions, concerns, and problems when needed.
  9. Makes recommendations regarding actions that nurture student growth, development, engagement, and long-term career preparation.
  10. Develops milestones that enhance student experiences and responsibilities as employees.
  11. Collaborate with human resource colleagues on suggesting job codes for student employees that create transparent pay ranges for applicable positions.
  12. Lead presentations and trainings to individuals and groups related to student development, learning outcomes, and supervision practices, to name a few.
  13. Coordinate and lead an annual orientation and several networking opportunities for student employees in Student Affairs to build relationships and communities. Work with supervisors on developing information included in orientation and information sessions for training that direct the work of student assistants.
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in human resources, business, higher education, communications, or similar field, or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience); and four years of experience in a human resources or higher education setting. OR A master's degree in a related field, two years of experience, and effective communication skills are required.
