Job Description Summary

The Host/Reporter works under the supervision of the News Director. The Host/Reporter hosts broadcasts as needed of NPR's All Things Considered, Morning Edition, and the WFDD Noon Newscast on occasion. This position may be asked to broadcast special coverage, including breaking news and fund drive programming, as well as occasional voice tracking. The Host/Reporter uses solid news judgment to identify news topics of importance to a 32-county region, writes and re-writes copy and scripts for clear delivery and ease of understanding. The Host/Reporter may also produce spot news as well as in-depth radio features and special reports as assigned for broadcast and/or online platforms.

Job Description

Essential Functions:
  • Hosting (80%) – Hosts local breaks during NPR's All Things Considered, Morning edition, and/or noon newscasts or other midday programming breaks.
  • Board operation (10%) — Runs automation system and board for special programming and/or fund drives.
  • Reporting (10%) – Researches and writes news copy for newscasts in coordination with the news department's planning and content. May also pitch stories and report on in-depth stories on occasion.
  • Administrative (10%) - The Host/Reporter is responsible for appropriate record keeping, correspondence, phone calls, supplies and equipment and other duties as assigned. Also, they may be called upon to participate in station membership campaigns and community-building events.
  • Other - Adheres to deadlines and, in concert with appropriate staff, makes timely and effective decisions in situations requiring prompt attention. The Host/Reporter works in close concert with other staff and under the supervision of the News Director.
Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • A four-year degree or equivalent required.
  • Must have demonstrated ability to clearly deliver live news reports in a conversational manner.
  • Must have experience in news-gathering, writing, editing and radio production for short-form and long-form reports.
  • Demonstrates ability to work within a live broadcast environment.
  • Displays knowledge of and adherence to high ethical standards.
  • Possesses effective communication and interpersonal skills. Must have excellent writing, grammar and spelling skills.
  • Must have excellent memory for details, be able to meet daily deadlines under pressure and deal effectively with simultaneous tasks.
  • Ability to travel, as required.
  • Valid driver license with good driving record. Must be insurable.
  • Skills required also include on-line research, word processing, digital editing, operation of studio mixers/boards and equipment and operation of light office equipment.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • Experience in a public radio news environment preferred.
  • Possesses broad knowledge of local and regional issues.
  • Web posting and social media experience.
  • Experience with on-air news delivery, hosting and fundraising
  • Ability to work well both independently and in a small group.
  • Ability to lift light equipment (approximately 5 pounds).
